'The 'F' Series: Future'

It's been a long time since I last posted on this blog, so here's some images of my last polymer sculpture for you to view. Its part of a group of work I've called The 'F' Series this is stage three named Future. This piece is the follow up to the prototype in an earlier post. Everything has been made from Polymer clay. The organic life forms either side of the glowing green porthole are preventing anyone from entering this abandon space craft. Approx 26"x14"x4" in size. Sorry about the reflections on the glass case, as soon as I get a better image of the finished piece I will upload it.

My New Business: Upcycled Accessories made from Reclaimed Leather

Sorry for being away for so long but I've been working on setting up my own business making accessories from reclaimed leather and suede. At the moment I've only made cuffs but I have plans to make other items to wear and hang on your wall. This particular cuff (above) is 100% handmade by myself. The cream suede has been recycled from a jacket and the adornments have been made also by myself from polymer clay and oregano! I've also used brown and gold metallic thread to decorate the cuff. Its Approx 7" long by 3" wide and backed with green felt. Prototype for a new sculpture.

These two items are prototypes for a Sci-Fi sculpture I'm creating. Using polymer clay I wanted to get a feel contrasting textures. The high gloss of the surrounding spiked piece in conjunction with the granite texture of the elliptical stone offset each other. Doing this prototype have made me think about the importance of texture and how they can be used effectively.

'Protection II:The Warning'

This sculpture is made from polymer clay, organic material and gem stones. 'Protection II: The Warning' is the second part to the pencil drawing that is in fact my header for this blog :D entitled 'Protection: Mechanical Reproduction'. This sculpture captures the creation of an alien/mythological creatures life at its development stage. The question is whether or not to destroy this dangerous creature before it annihilates our civilization?

"They Mostly Come at Night... Mostly!" (Finished Piece).

This is the finished piece of work based on a cross section of an ‘alien’ spine. Much like the previous test piece in an earlier post I’ve used a blend of polymer clays to achieve a bone texture and emphasised certain aspects with metal and copper leaf. For those of you that know your Sci-fi films you would have noticed that the name of this sculpture is a quote from the film Aliens, it’s my favourite part of the film. As I enjoyed making this sculpture so much I am considering turning it into a series of work – creating unusual ‘alien’ bones that some archaeologist could have excavated perhaps haha?!

'Springtime... is on my mind': Nevill Hall Exhibition

I created this piece for the Nevill Hall exhibition, which opened on the 31st July until 10th September. I really had to go out of my comfort zone for this one as Nevill Hall had very strict and ridged criteria of what could and could not be exhibited, hence to say everything that was on the list stating what couldn’t be shown – I do! No abstract, no nudity/anatomy, no aggressive images etc, but the one that floored me was no surrealism! This is what I’m all about; I love to explore and experiment with everyday objects and create an alternate reality. So I asked myself the question – If I was in hospital what picture would I like to see? It would have to be relaxing, uplifting and fairly pretty. I struggle with pretty, the first two I can deal with but ‘pretty’ is a challenge. Thankfully inspiration hit me, a friends of mine’s girlfriend has a tattoo in the form of a Japanese style blossom tree, this I thought was ideal; it has all the components mention above. I wish to add that I have only taken inspiration from the tattoo and not a direct copy. Also the title is a lyric taken from the amazing Spinal Tap’s song Springtime. The piece is made from polymer clay and other organic material. The size is 20x16 inches.
